A propos

About

Simon Calone paints, draws and installs. Trained as an architect, he develops a multidisciplinary practice combining airbrush, oil paint, oil pastel and installation. His background feeds a deliberately naive approach, in which gesture, running ahead of theory, brings the work into being.

Architecture taught him to read space: what it allows, what it prevents, the way it arranges bodies without ever saying so. That gaze did not leave him when he began to paint. It shifted:

From the built to what inhabits it, from structure to what it constrains.

He depicts situations from his daily life, which he anonymises. By removing a name, a face, a date, he releases what remains. The experience then stops belonging to him and becomes available to anyone who recognises it.

His research turns on a raw sincerity: an outsider’s gaze cast on a rigid environment. A stance both political and intimate, without loud declaration, running through all of his work. It is not a matter of denouncing, but of making tangible what it costs to hold one’s place in a space that was not designed for you.

This work has unfolded across the series Memento, the artist’s first, and Archives of Lost Youth, both shown at the Chapelle Saint-Lazare in 2026. He collaborates regularly with the artist Magda Cirillo, with whom he develops installations and performances around transitional spaces, collective memory and what makes a community. Their piece Devenir Hydre, created in situ for a Parisian third place, was co-produced by heyheyparis ! and Plateau Urbain.
